GUAYABITOS

The history of Rincón de Guayabitos, commonly known as Guayabitos, traces back to pre-Hispanic times, with the bay attracting explorers and, later, opportunistic pirate ships in the 1500s seeking its riches. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the Mexican government, through the creation of the Banderas Bay Trust (Fideicomiso de Bahia de Banderas), propelled Guayabitos into the spotlight as a vacation destination.

Since then, Guayabitos has flourished, blossoming into a vibrant coastal retreat adorned with small hotels, tourist shops, restaurants, trailer parks, and residential areas. Today, it’s a beloved getaway for middle-class Mexican families, drawing crowds year-round and especially during Semana Santa, Mexico’s Spring Break equivalent. Moreover, an increasing number of budget-conscious travelers from Canada and the United States have added Guayabitos to their travel itineraries as they explore the charms of Puerto Vallarta and its surroundings.

Comprising three distinct towns—Rincón de Guayabitos, La Penita de Jaltemba, and Los Ayala—Guayabitos forms a cohesive community nestled along the picturesque Jaltemba Bay. While Guayabitos and La Penita have somewhat merged, creating a bustling hub facing the expansive sandy beach, a rocky outcrop delineates the southern end of Guayabitos from the tranquil town of Los Ayala, nestled within its own bay.

Life in Guayabitos embodies a laid-back beach lifestyle, where time seems to slow down, and the rhythm of daily life revolves around the ebb and flow of activities on the beach. Whether it’s swimming and sunbathing under the warm sun or unwinding with a refreshing drink during happy hour, Guayabitos offers a serene escape for those seeking relaxation by the sea.
